Bombers Trade Good & Blunder

July 26, 2008

By Frank Solares

Behind the exterior and on the surface you would say that the Nady & Marte Trade were a steel.

Lets take a look at the trade from the Yanks point of view.

(Ross Ohlendorf, Jose Tabata, Dan McCutchen and Jeff Karstens to Pittsburgh for Nady and Marte.)

Ohlendorf was no longer in the mix to be on the rotation with Cashman stock pile of pitchers in the last few years he became expendable.

Lets Grade the Trade from a Yankees perspective.

Grade Ohlendorf = B

Good long relief pitcher, a little injury prone, not in the mix to be a starting pitcher. Good option

Karstens like Ohlendorf had his opportunity as a starting pitcher. His number in the minor leagues have always been great. Something that as a starter has not been the case. In his starting Career he has 3 wins 5 loses with a 5.65 ERA.

Karstens = A+

Not in the plans as a starter, also injury prone. Good move for the Yanks.

McCutchen is like the little girl with the curl, when he is good he is really good. When he is bad he is really Bad. According to MILB.com In 2007 Daniel Combined at Class A then advanced Tampa and Double-A Trenton to go 14-4 with a 2.47 ERA in 23 starts with A Tampa & Double-A Trenton he also tied for second in the organization in wins and ranked third in ERA. He recorded 103K and only 33BB in 142.0IP.

Grade McCutchen = D

Might become a star with the Bucks, his walk to strike out ratio is really amazing. This will be a bad move for the Yanks.

Tabata the Venezuelan born Outfielder is the top five Yankees prospect and at only 19 his potential is Bernie like or dare I say Ken Griffey.  Baseball America.com has Tabata as one of the Yankees top prospects. Two Years ago he was the number one position player and top Prospect as per BaseballAmerica.com. He had some personal issues and an injury has limited his power, despite that he is only 19.

Grade Tabata = F or double F

Trading Tabata for these two players was a mistake. A five tool player, he can play all three outfield positions. Will be known as the player that got away!

The Mets have the misfortune of trading Ryan, Seaver, and now Kazmir as well as many others. The Yanks have a blunder as well in recent years, does any one remember Phelps for Brunner.

This will be the worst trade Cashman ever made in his Career.

The Trade is a D with Tabata on it, without tabata it would be an A+.

We can't win them all there guys, pick your battles.

"Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."
