Bo Sox & Flu bug could not keep Yanks down.
By Frank Solares.
Despite the fact that seven players were hit by a pitch, and that a bad case of the Flu is running through the Yankees club house, the Yankees finally get a victory from the hated Sox.
This was a very close ball game and the Yankees have not won many close ball games this year.
Who knew that a key assist and a sacrifice fly RBI by rookie left fielder Gardner would turn out to be the difference in the game.
If someone would have told me that Mo would give up 2 hits, hit two batters, and loaded the bases in the ninth and still came away with the save, I would have never believed them.
At this time last year the Yanks were 9.5 games out of first and looking like a very old team. We know what happened next they won 11 straight and had the best record in Baseball in the second half.
This year they have climbed into a similar hole. Despite the fact that in the last nine games the bullpen has pitched 32 innings have only given up 4 runs while striking out 28 batters, the offense has sadly under perform. Key loses to Matsui, Damon, and Posada have crippled the Bombers run production.
A very interesting ninth inning by the 26 time champs and a great game by Mike Mussina and the Yankees finally win a game against the Sox 2-1.
Star Of Stars!
Future Hall of Fame candidate Mike Mussina personally showed Tito Francona that he belongs in the All Star Game. Mussina would be the second Yankee pitcher participating in the Game. Well some of us think that Joba Chamberlain belongs in the game if you combine his setup role and starting role.
Mussina is now 11-6 in the year he has been the Yanks best starter. We have seen him become a great pitcher, his change of speeds and ability to place the ball where ever he wants is, dare I say Maddox like. His line today was 6 innings 4 hits and 0 runs allowed on five strikeouts.
DL Bound
Johnny Damon is likely headed to the DL. Peter "The Man" Abraham is reporting that Johnny indicated that it could be 10 days before he can throw a baseball.
If the Yankees wanted too, they could bring up Edwar Gonzalez from Trenton. Edwar is batting .288 with 12 HR, 52 RBI and a nice .818 OPS in 83 games combined at Trenton and Tampa. Edwar is 25 from Maracaibo Venezuela. Edwar Gonzalez is listed at 5 10 and 200 lbs. Brian if your reading this bring him up please.
